As part of one of the 150 tours in the Mammut Peak Project, a team of editors from Skitour magazine set out for China to tackle the 7,509-metre peak of Muztagh Ata. In less than 14 days, the four young men from Munich had completed a daring ski tour. The result: an interesting special skitourmagazin.de on the Mammut anniversary tour!

With a maximum available time frame of three weeks, in August 2011, the team travelled from Munich to West China, to Subash to be more precise. From there, they had to walk for four hours to reach the base camp at 4,400 metres. The group had decided to make their way from the base camp to the summit without any additional assistance, such as medicines (e.g. Diamox) or porters. Therefore, to acclimatise as effectively as possible, they completed two tours from the base camp. The first was a day-trip to bring equipment and food to Camp 1. For the second excursion, they spent three nights at an altitude of over 5,000 metres. On their return to the base camp, they recovered from their initial exertions and kept a look out for the next period of fine weather. When the outlook was good, they set off in pursuit of the summit. They spent the first night in Camp 1, before climbing up to Camp 2 at 6,200 metres and finally Camp 3 at 6,800 metres. After the third night, the team set out on the sprint to the summit… After successfully completing the final 700 metres, three of the four mountaineers stood on the summit. Unfortunately, one of their party was suffering so much from cold toes that he had been forced to turn around before the summit.

This was followed by the real highlight of the Skitour magazine tour: a dream descent in 20 centimetres of powder snow to the first high-altitude camp! Despite thigh muscles cramped with lactic acid and screaming out for oxygen, the four made it back to the base camp. An improvised meal and a few cans of a Chinese hops-malt drink were waiting for the extreme ski tourers. After a short recovery period, they travelled home to Europe.

Du willst wissen, wie das Team rund um das Skitour-Magazin das Gipfelprojekt erlebt hat? Dann lese hier der kurze Reisebericht aus China:

Mit dem maximalen Zeitfenster von 3 Wochen reiste das Team aus München im August 2011 in den Westen Chinas genauer nach Subash. Von dort waren es dann noch vier Stunden Fussmarsch ins 4400 Meter hohe Basislager. Die Gruppe hatte sich entschlossen vom Basecamp zum Gipfel ohne weitere Hilfsmittel, wie Medikamente (z.B. Diamox) oder Träger auszukommen. Zur optimalen Akklimatisation unternahmen sie daher vom Basecamp zwei Touren. Das erste Mal brachten sie in einem Tag Ausrüstung und Essen ins Lager 1. Beim zweiten Ausflug verbrachten sie drei Nächte auf über 5'000 Meter Höhe. Wieder im Basislager angekommen, erholten sie sich von den ersten Strapazen und hielten Ausschau nach der nächsten Schönwetterperiode. Als die Aussichten günstig waren, haben sie sich entschieden in Richtung Gipfel aufzubrechen. Die erste Nacht verbrachten sie im Lager 1, danach ging es weiter hoch auf 6'200 Meter ins Lager 2 und schlussendlich ins Lager 3 auf 6'800 m ü. M. Nach der dritten Nacht setzte das Team zum Gipfelsprint an… Nach erfolgreicher Bewältigung der letzten 700 Höhenmeter standen drei von vier Gipfelstürmern auf der Spitze des Berges. Leider hatte ein Kollege so kalte Zehen, dass er vor dem Gipfel umkehren musste.

Nun folgte das eigentliche Highlight der Tour vom Skitour-Magazin: Eine Traumabfahrt bei 20 Zentimeter Pulverschnee bis ins erste Hochlager! Trotz von Milchsäure verstopften und nach Sauerstoff flehenden Oberschenkelmuskeln schafften die vier die Rückkehr ins Basislager. Dort wartete auch schon ein improvisiertes Nachtessen und einige Dosen chinesisches Hopfen-Malz-Getränk auf die Extremskitourengeher. Nach einer kurzen Erholungszeit traten sie dann die Heimreise nach Europa an.
