Mount St. Helens is known as a stratovolcano, or steepsided volcano, located in Southwest Washington, which is part of the cascade range extending from Mount Giribaldi in British Columbia Canada, to Lassen Peak in Northern California. Mt. St. Helens was mostly tranquil until 1980 when it erupted. The last significant eruption was about 150 years ago (about the same time Mammut was born!) Our motivation to summit Mount St. Helens lies in the sheer excitement of summiting an active volcano during the winter season. Every member of the team are avid hikers and snowshoers. Two of us, myself and another team member, summited Mt. Whitney (4,421m- known as the tallest peak in the continental U.S.) last year on our Independence Day, July 4th. All of the team members have climbed, or climb regularly peaks such as San Jacinto (3,302m), San Gregornio (3,506m), Mt. Baldy (3,069m )and the southern Sierra range, which is close enough to where we live to backpack and snowshoe on the weekends. We would certainly be open to climbing another peak in the Southern Sierras, Mt. Shasta, Mt. Rainier, the Tetons, or any of the the "14ers" in the Rockies. We chose Mt. St. Helens because it poses the unique challenge of summiting during the winter season and is also the most well known, beautiful, mystical and powerful volcanic mountain in the United States and is a part of American history. Our team would be honored to be a part of the Mammut 150 year peak project. Thank you so much for the opportunity.
Note: The first picture attched is Mt.St. Helens; the second and third pictures attached is existing summit of Mt. Whitney (myself and fellow team member) July 4th 2010. The 4th picture is our team snowshoeing up Mt. San Gregornio (mentioned above). The 5th is myself hiking on Angles Landing in Zion National Park.
